    Maths Parents’ Workshops

    Maths Parents’ Workshops

Summary of what was discussed during parents workshops

    Kinder 1 and 2.
During this meeting I was not present but I received some feedback from the Maths Support Teachers present, Ms Joanne Vella, Ms Maria Grima and Ms Maria Elena Abela .
As an introduction the parents were introduced to the Guidelines for Kinder classes. These are not new to the Kindergarten teachers but not all parents are familiar with them. The support team went on the discuss and share ideas on how Maths is introduced in Kinder classes through play and also through stories. Also the teachers shared ideas on how Parents can help their children do Maths at home through everyday situations.
After answering several questions the parents were given a short break and immediately afterwards they worked in groups with different resources found around the house. They were asked to find ways to teach Maths through those resources. They were also given story books. Eg. The Enormous Turnip – from this story the concept of sizes and ordinal numbers can be introduced.
Parents had time to share their ideas.
    Years 1-2-3
During this meeting the support team emphasized the importance of a positive attitude towards Maths. The calculation strategies used in the early years were explained to show the different approch in Maths.
The parents had an opportunity to have a look at the syllabus of years 1, 2 and 3 and ask questions at this point.
At this point the teachers shared ideas on how to help at home. How to practice Mathematical language and skills in real life situations. Parents were given practical ideas for mental maths at home.
    Year 4-5-6
This meeting was held on the 16th January. I was present together with Ms Maria Spiteri and Ms Josianne Borg.
During this meeting we talked in detail about the different calculation strategies used in year 4, 5 and 6 using Abacus. Explained and gave examples of addition and subtraction strategies, multiplication and division using minus methodTime and time problems using timeline.
Talked about the importance of mental mathematics and explained how lessons are delivered.
Gave examples of mental mathematics questions in exam papers.
During the second part of the meeting we concentrated on how to help our children understand the importance of Maths and making them aware that we use maths all the time.
Gave them concrete ideas on what they can do at home to help their children be more confident when it comes to problem solving and investigations.
Examples - Cooking in the kitchen:
Measuring liquids and solids, reading a scale, doubling and halving in recipes, fractions.
Investigations during a shopping situation: Financial literacy, money problems, rounding up to estimate how much money is needed, percentages during sales, working our special offers.
At the end of the session parents had time to ask questions.
